Little Local – June 12
Countdown to summer is on! Here’s what to do this weekend (plus your passport update!)

The countdown to summer is on, and the BC Summer Reading Club is kicking off soon at your local library! If you’re looking for more fun ways to enjoy stories, we’ve rounded up a few great podcasts for kids, too.
A big thanks to everyone who voted on the Summer Adventure Passport—it was a unanimous YES! We’re getting it ready and can’t wait to share it with you soon.
And don’t forget, Father’s Day is this Sunday! A few great ways to celebrate: head to FernFest for live music and street fun, take a steam train ride at the Heritage Acres Summer Fair, or go gnome hunting at Butchart Gardens. There’s no shortage of ways to get out and enjoy the weekend together.

Your Guide to the BC Summer Reading Club
The Summer Reading Club is coming back to your local library, and it’s such a fun way to keep kids engaged with books over the summer. It’s free and geared to kids ages 5–14, but yes, even little ones who aren’t reading yet can join! (Being read to counts.)
Starting Monday, June 16, you can pick up a reading package at any branch. The challenge runs from July 2 to August 20, and kids are encouraged to log at least 15 minutes of reading (or being read to) each day. Along the way, they’ll collect stickers and prizes!

Podcasts: Screen-Free Fun
Whether you're in the car, making dinner, or winding down after a busy day, podcasts can be a fun and easy screen-free option for kids.
Since there are no visuals, kids use their imagination to picture what’s happening, which builds focus and creativity. And if your child is old enough, asking simple questions like “What did you think of that part?” or “What would you have done?” helps build their comprehension and confidence.

Here are few podcasts to check out, including a fun, local one:

It follows two mischievous raccoons, Penny and Joe, as they explore familiar spots like Beacon Hill Park, the Empress Hotel, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Each five-minute episode is full of giggles, sound effects, and sweet lessons about kindness, curiosity, and community.

FernFest
Friday, June 13 (5pm-10pm) & Saturday, June 14 (11:30am-10pm)
📍Fernwood Square + Beyond
If you’re looking for something fun (and free!) to do with the kids next weekend, FernFest is such a good one. It’s Fernwood’s big annual block party with live music, food trucks, and a full-on kids’ zone (face painting, bubbles, games, and magic shows). The vibe is super relaxed and community-oriented, so it’s easy to just show up and wander.
We’ve gone in the past and it’s always a fun, low-key way to spend a few hours. You can grab a snack, check out the local art market, and let the kids dance or chase bubbles.
